BioPERSONALITY: Maito Gai is energetic and irrepressible, loud and obnoxious, courageous and daring, and not the brightest bulb in the box. He will gladly accept a challenge even when none has been made, pushing himself and trying to push those around him to be better. Gai is an endless optimist. He won’t accept any possibility of being beaten or outmatched, even when against Itachi and Kisame. When Kakashi and Naruto can’t quite manage to deal with Deidara on their own, Gai charges in, confident that he can save the day. He is not above crying manly tears, and he is very proud of his dynamic poses and cooking. He is obsessed with youth and speed, finding how things relate to them at every turn.
He has a serious side, though he doesn’t bother showing it often. It’s far easier and more fun to be corny when encouraging Lee or overdramatic when talking to Kakashi than it is to step in and become completely serious when Gaara tries to kill his precious student. That is, however, where Gai draws the line. You do not hurt his precious people. Nor do you look down on them.
Gai has great faith in others. Neji was from the branch family, not supposed to be worth anyone’s time; Tenten had no bloodline limit, no particular genius; Lee had only taijutsu. Despite what anyone else might say, Gai was determined that they would be the best. And in his eyes, they are.
Focused is a very good word for Gai. Kakashi has never shown the least bit of interest in their ‘rivalry,’ but Gai is determined that it exists, and even remembers the scores from the rock-paper-scissors games they played as children. He sticks to self-imposed punishments if he loses, no matter how physically complicated they are.
TIMELINE: The Chuunin exams have ended. Neji won, but Tenten is down and Lee might be out for good.
